Biopesticides and Biocontrol for Green Agriculture
H.A. Modi
Due to chemical dominance biocontrol in crop protection was neglected. Soon after, the consequences of indiscriminate use of pesticides was realized resulting in imposition of ban on many of them. This opened new vistas for rapid developments of biocontrol as a discipline. Detailed investigations on the biology and ecology of pest and natural enemies have provided insights which have enabled the control techniques to be used more effectively. Understanding the epidemiology, life cycles and in vitro culture techniques of antagonistic organisms have been successfully exploited to develop biocontrol agents as biopesticides. Biopesticides have several advantages over chemical pesticides. In developing countries, where there is a shortage of foreign exchange, an attractive possibility is the manufacture of biopesticides using cheap locally available agricultural wastes as a substrate for culturing the biological control agents by cottage industries or the farmers cooperatives.
Contents of book “Biopesticides and Biocontrol for Green Agriculture” include :

Soil Nutrient Management for Sustaiable Agriculture
A. Singh
The importance of soil nutrient management for sustainable agriculture has been widely recognized. Soil is the reservoir nutrients and half of the elements in the periodic table are being uptake from the soil by the plants but of these, only sixteen elements are essential. A soil with a Ph of 6.5-7.5 with adequate soil organic matter (about 2 to 4%) will help supply many of these nutrients; however, additional nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium are usually needed for good yields. There is increasing trend of nutrient imbalance in the soil; evident from the fact the amount of nutrient removed from the soil is more than the quantity added in the soil. This nutrient imbalance is called nutrient mining and nutrient mining resulted in poor soil health. Nutrient availability depends not only on soil nutrient store but also on the favourable soil conditions as soil reaction, physical and biological properties. Sound nutrient management is prerequisite for enhancement & maintenance of soil productivity, sustainability of agriculture.
This book contains 14 chapters on diverse vital aspects of soil management. The topics covered are role of biofertilizers, nutrient management perspectives, organisms in the soil, soil quality indicators-methods, allelopathy in soil management, services rendered by Arbuscular Mycorrhizal fungi, green manuring for improving soil fertility, role of customized fertilization for soil health and sustainability, conventional/instrumental vis a vis rapid methods of soil quality analysis, climate change and nutrient management, soil acidity and its sustainable amelioration in India, utilization of distillery spent wash in agriculture. The purpose of the process documentation is to pool the scattered information related to sustainable soil management in a book form with the help of expert academician across the country. Authors have tried level best to cater the needs of the students, extension functionaries and policy planners on the significant aspects of soil nutrient management for ensuring long term sustainability for meeting the requirement of future generations. This book may be used as reference book for future use in improving overall soil productivity. ..more

Bio-Fuel Plants : Cultivation Practices & Seed Bank
S. K. Mehla
Soaring oil prices have encouraged major consumers worldwide to sharply increase their use of “green” biofuel. These concerns have lead to reasearch for biodiesel as commerical alternative. Since edible oil demand is higher than its domestic production, in India this is not feasible to divert this oil for production of biodiesel. Under Indian conditions only such plant sources can be considered for biofuel, which produces non-edible oil in appreciable quantity and can be grown in large scale on non cropped marginal and wastelands. There are many tree species which bear seeds rich in oil and can serve as excellent feedstock for biodiesel production.
The book deals with cultivation practices of bio-fuel plants. Crops for waste land utilization, Bio-waste utilization as organic fertilizes, micropropagation protocols are other major themes of this book.
The book will be handy reference for students, academicians, researchers and people with little or no training in biofuel plants." ..more

G. Krishnamurthy
Bamboo, “The poor man’s timber”, is one of the most important forestry species distributed throughout the India and has major contribution to the rural and national economy. Bamboo is an important livelihood for rural people and traditional workers. Apart from industrial and commercial uses, bamboo is widely used as building material and extensively used in construction of houses, walls, roofing material etc. Climate change is a immediate and unprecedented threat to the food security and income of hundreds of millions of people who depends on agriculture/forest for their livelihoods. Climate change will cause yield decline and health hazards, with South Asia particularly hard hit. In recent years, with the looming threat of global warming, there is much interest in bamboo as a carbon sink. Bamboo stands can achieve total standing biomass comparable to tree forests and are capable of sequestering substantial amounts of carbon. Inter-mast periods in bamboos, though thought of as species specific and rigid, is not the case in many. The present book titled “Ecological Management of Bamboo Resource in India” has covered rehabilitation, sustainable management, policy issues, reproductive biology and biotechnology, pest and diseases management, status of bamboo and rattan, entrepreneurship development, silvi-agricultural and agroforestry, storage and longevity of seeds, genetic resources for food security, ecological, economic and social problems, taxonomic identification of bamboo resource in different states of the country. The publication would certainly be significant for evolving right directions and new dimensions for ecosystem management and climate change. Besides, this publication would be of vital use for Foresters, Scientific communities, Environmentalists, Academicians, Industrialists, Policy makers, NGO’s and other Stakeholders engaged in community development through conservation of bamboo resource and climate change. ..more

Relevance of Organic Farming
B. L. Jana
Organic Agriculture or Organic Farming is the most widely recognised alternative farming system, which avoids or largely excludes the use of agrochemicals (synthetic fertilizers, pesticides, growth regulators, etc). It is gaining gradual momentum across the world, and growing awareness of health and environmental issues in agriculture although it was initiated before 10,000 years back in India when the farmers started cultivation depending on natural resources only. It is the production management system which promotes and enhances agro–ecosystem health, including biodiversity, biological cycles and soil biological activity. This is accomplished by using agronomic, biological and mechanical methods as opposed to using synthetic materials, to fulfill any specific function within the systems, which rely upon crop rotations, crop residues, animal and other different organic manures, legumes, green manures, vermiculture and vermicomposting, biogas slurry, on–farm and off – farm organic wastes, etc. controlling crop pests organically, maintaining soil health and sustain effort of supplying plant nutrients with profitable crop production.
With this vision and mission keeping in mind, the book entitled “Relevance of Organic Farming” deals with Organic Farming including Organic Movement, concept, role, principles, relevance in present context, Status in India; Soils and Soil Environment for Plant Growth in Organic Farming, Humus Formation, Soil Health Card, Problems created by Modern Intensive Agriculture, Issues leading to Sustainable Agriculture; Status of Organic Farming, Global Scenario; Organic Farming in India; Organic Farming–Principle of Sustainability, Green Technology, Technologies for Producing Organic and Biofertilizers from Local Sources, Biological Technologies for Environmentally Safer Pest and Diseases Control, Organic Farming Systems, Crop Residue Management; Bio–Intensive Nutrient Management–Biofertilizers, Earthworms, Blue Green Algae (BGA), other Agronomic & Ecological Benefits, Vermiculture, Other Ecofriendly Farming Systems, Green Manuring, Neem for Organic Farming, Biogas Technology; Post Harvest Handling for Organic Crops, Research Activities on Organic Agriculture etc. ..more
