Production & Protection of Seed Spices
E. V. D. Sastry
,
K. S. Shekhawat
Seed spices are the winter season annuals whose fruit (seed) is used as spice. About twenty seed spices are cultivated and almost all of them are grown in India, four of thse namely coriander, cumin, fennel and fenugreek are cultivated extensively and hence are called major seed spices. India is the leader in production, consumption and export of seed spices. Among the Indian states, Gujarat and Rajasthan lead in the area and production of these spices. Unfortunately these crops are still cultivated on marginal lands with almost nil to little inputs. In many a cases, local varieties are still cultiviated with very low production potential. It is therefore right time we take the stock of the situation. In an effort to know the status of seed spices research and development, eminent researchers from across the country have been invited to contribute their findings and views which led to the present compilation. The present book contains chapters that are written by who’s who in seed spices research in India.
The opening chapter “Seed spices research: path less treated” tries to analyze the problem of seed spices research vis-à-vis with the research in cereals. The available germplasm collection in India are analyzed critically in the chapter on “Evaluation and coservation of seed spices Genetic resources: status and issues”. The research and accomplishments of All India Coordinated Research Project on Spices in seed spices sphere is very well presented in a chapter “Research efforts of All India Coordinated Research Project on Spices for productivity of seed spices. The need for good agricultural practices has been presented in chapter on ‘Good agricultural practices: Need for clean seed spices production”, similarly an analysis on quality aspects is presented in chapter by “Quality aspects of seed spices for export”. “Studies on seed spices improvement” looks at the methods adopted for genetic improvement and ways to modify the same for better genetic gains. Besides these, several chapters devote to look at the research findings on organic way of production of seed spices, Nutrition management, disease and pest management in seed spices. Unless the findings of researches reach the farmers and are adopted by them they are of little value. Hence several chapters are devoted to understand the problem of adoption of improved methods of seed spices cultivation. Similarly a chapter on “Marketing of important seed spices in Rajasthan” looks at the marketing of seed spices. Seed spices contain essential oils which are extracted and marketed as value added product. The commercial exploitability of the essential oils of seed spices is discussed in “Commercial exploitation of essential oils obtained from seed spices for use in aromatherapy”.
The book is expected to be of much help to all those connected with seed spices. It is hoped that this book will find acceeptance with scientists, industrialists, lanners as well as students connected or interested in seed spices. ..more

India is the home to a vast variety of spices- some indigenous and others introduced. It is also home to important aromatic plants. India grows, consumes and export a vast variety of spices, while it also imports sizeable quantity of spices. Similarly, a number of essential oils extracted from different aromatic plants are used in domestic industry. Essentially, the extraction of essential oils was a cottage industry which has now grown in size enormously. Menthol production was unknown to India before 1960, but now India is a world leader in the production and export of natural menthol. Spices and aromatic plants together form an important part of our export earnings. This position is challenged now by new entrants in the international trade. It is therefore right time we take the stock of the situation. In an effort to know the status of spices and aromatic plant research and development, eminent researchers from across the country have been invited to contribute their findings and views which led to the present compilation. Medicinal Trees : Distribution, Characteristics and Traditional Formulations
Sheelwant Patel
The ‘Medicinal Trees’ compiles information about one hundred tree species that possess substantial medicinal values. It give various local names of species, its distribution, characteristics of plant and traditional therapeutic formulations of its body parts. It mostly chooses such trees that one encounters growing in vicinity–on road sides, in parks, in homestead lands, in waste lands. It endeavours to reinvent medicines into trees that we recognize as fruit trees, timber trees, shade trees, flowering trees and shrubs and even as useless wild growths of waste lands.
The ‘Medicinal Trees : Distribution, Characteristics and Traditional Formulations’ attempts to re-invent the traditional therapeutical uses of parts of trees our forefathers had used since time immemorial to cure a hoard of ailments. Through use of roots, bark, leaves, latex, flowers, fruits, and seeds they had perfected a system of medicines that we have almost lost. We know a banyan tree provides excellent shade. Do we know that ‘Banyan leaves cure diarrhoea, nose bleeding, and bubo. Latex cures cracked heels, swollen gums and spermatorrhea. Fruits remove dark spots from facial skins and restore its natural glow and charm. Aerial roots tighten and lift sagging breasts. Bark cures vaginal piles, sprains, burning sensation in body and irregularity of menstruation?’
This publication will serve the interest of medicinal plant lovers, collectors, teachers, medical practitioners, research workers and botantists. ..more

Medicinal herbs and spices find their use in all systems of medicine. However, the major part of the raw material requirements of pharmaceutical industries is still met out of herbs collected from wild resources. This leads to biodiversity and environmental degradation. To meet such challenges, an equilibrated approach for domestication and cultivation of otherwise, wild medicinal plants and spices is imperative. Very scanty information on such aspects are available in literature which describes the therapeutic potential of about 20000 plants while only very few (about 100) plants are known to be cultivated. Therefore, there is urgent need of concerted efforts to bring more and more plants under farming system. Present book is pioneer in this regard and describes various aspects of potential agrotechnology of medicinal plants and spices. These aspects embody reliable and latest information on applied biology, botany and genetic resources of annuals, biennials and trees. Indigenous Herbal Medicines : Tribal Formulations and Traditional Herbal Practices
Deepak Acharya
,
Anshu Shrivastava
Indigenous knowledge behind traditional practice of herbs is like crude diamond, hardest but without shine and not acknowledged and accepted as “Diamond” by the people. Today an artificial shining stone, well packed, aggressively marketed and supported by strategic advertisement is the biggest threat to the existence of real Diamond. If this continues then this phenomenon of endangered indigenous knowledge of tribals will become extinct and needless to discuss, we the human being will be deprived of the real essence and hence the biggest looser. It is important to know that it requires $ 1.5 billion and 10-15 years to develop a new drug, whereas, the development of new drug through traditional herbal knowledge and tribal healers could be much shorter and needless to discuss “cost effective”. The whole book moves around the fulcrum of traditional herbal knowledge of Indian tribesmen. It is the finest attempt to explain the traditional herbal knowledge of Indian tribal regions which are very different in terms of forest, vegetation, cultures, and beliefs. Nevertheless, equally competitive so far age old medicinal practices are concerned.
The book deals with about 210 important medicinal plants used by the traditional herbal healers in India. Given vernacular names in English, Sanskrit and many other Indian regional languages, short diagnostic taxonomic description, ecology and distributional aspects provided under each plant and up-to-date information about the ongoing research of every medicinal plant mentioned here makes this book more reader friendly and advanced. Latest accepted and valid botanical names in accordance with ICBN have been adopted for the medicinal plants to sustain correct identity. The book contains more than 2200 traditional herbal practices as per the different disorders, methodology of drug preparation and procedure of intake. Easy language, 90 high resolution colour photographs and systematic presentation of medicinal plants with major emphasis given on traditional herbal therapies, usage, and comparative analysis along with data-tables make the study more exhaustive and generate temptation to read it again and again.
It is hoped that it will serve as an informative databank for herbal researchers who are engaged in new drug development; a perfect reference material for Ethnobotanists, Herbalists and Pharmacologists; and a guiding tool for a housewife for home remedies. ..more

Bio-Fuel Plants : Cultivation Practices & Seed Bank
S. K. Mehla
Soaring oil prices have encouraged major consumers worldwide to sharply increase their use of “green” biofuel. These concerns have lead to reasearch for biodiesel as commerical alternative. Since edible oil demand is higher than its domestic production, in India this is not feasible to divert this oil for production of biodiesel. Under Indian conditions only such plant sources can be considered for biofuel, which produces non-edible oil in appreciable quantity and can be grown in large scale on non cropped marginal and wastelands. There are many tree species which bear seeds rich in oil and can serve as excellent feedstock for biodiesel production.
The book deals with cultivation practices of bio-fuel plants. Crops for waste land utilization, Bio-waste utilization as organic fertilizes, micropropagation protocols are other major themes of this book.
The book will be handy reference for students, academicians, researchers and people with little or no training in biofuel plants." ..more

Ornamental Crop Production Technology
S. K. Bhattacharjee
Floriculture is a fast expanding dynamic industry. Production technology has advanced with the efficient use of plant resources such as water, fertilizers, pesticides; and modification of microclimate that surrounds the plants as per need during various stages of growth, development and flowering. Protected cultivation provides an excellent facility for controlled cultivation of high value crops. Hence, polyhouses are made with all modern facilities including U.V. stabilized cladding film, heating, cooling, humidification, drip irrigation and fertigation systems. The structure and technology are, however, location and crop specific. Moreover, with the adoption of improved production technologies; a number of diseases, pests and weeds affecting ornamental crops are becoming a serious handicap in their economic production. Indiscriminate application of pesticides has lead to pest resistance and resurgence as well as adverse effect on ornamental crops and also on flora and fauna in the ecosystem.
In view of this an attempt has been made in this book to provide a wealth of fascinating information in 13 extensive review chapters like principles, technology and methodology of F1-hybrid seed production; micropropogation of ornamental crops; mericloning of orchids; greenhouses and glass houses, design of green houses, cladding material, shade nets and ventilation, economics of polyhouse cultivation; insects, pests, diseases and nematodes of ornamental plants and their management; weed management; and phytosanitary requirements for import and export of floriculture products and planting material. This publication will be of immense value and serve the interests of scientists, teachers, students, policy makers, amateur and commercial flower growers. ..more

Microbial Spoliage of Foods
H. A. Modi
The loss of food due to microbial spoilage has economic consequences for the producers, processors and consumers.
Except for sterile foods, all foods harbor microorganisms. Food spoilage stems from the growth of these microorganisms in food or in due to the action of microbial heat-stable enzymes. New marketing trends, the consumer’s desire for foods that are not overly processed and preserved, extended shelf-life, and chances of temperature abuse between production and consumption of foods have greatly increased the chances of food spoilage and, in some instances, with new types of microorganisms. The major concerns are the economic loss and wastage of food. New concepts are being studied to reduce contamination as well as control the growth of spoilage microbes in foods.
This book includes
• Food Microbiology and its Horizons • Basics of Human Nutrition • An Introduction to Microbial Spoilage of Foods • Spoilage of Meat and Meat Products
• Spoilage of Poultry and Eggs • Spoilage of Fish and other Seafoods • Spoilage of Dairy Products • Spoilage of Vegetables, Fruits and their Products • Spoilage of Cereal Products • Spoilage of Canned Foods

Amenity Horticulture, Biotechnology and Post-Harvest Technology
S. K. Bhattacharjee
Floriculture helps in enriching the quality of life and development of our society through environmental improvement, and purposeful use of socially and ecologically responsive plants in our landscape. There is a global concern for environmental improvement such as reduction of pollution and noise, energy use minimisation, prevention of erosion and flood, biodiversity and nature conservation, therapeutic and economic benefits of our environment.
It is well recognised that there is need to conserve biological diversity in both native and cultivated plant species. For genetic resource characterisation DNA marker polymerisation are advantageous. DNA finger printing techniques exhibit a great potential. Moreover, the application of biotechnology to the development of new varieties of flowers has been seriously considered. The genetic engineering technology has opened up possibilities for manipulation of flower senescence, colour pigments, plant height, flower shape, floral scent; and development of transgenic plants.
Futhermore, the changing scenario in international trade in ornamental crops which provide unlimited export potentialities, demand perfection in post harvest technology to offer quality plant products to the people around the world, all the year round.
This book is aimed to bring out an extensive and uptodate review on the above aspects for the benefit of readers. This book will be useful to the scientists, teachers, students, researchers, technologists, exporters, amateur and professional flower growers. ..more

Arvind Kumar
In spite of the tremendous progress made in food production at the global level, there is no reason to be complacent since the yields have plateaued. There are alarming pressures on natural resources such as soil, water, plants and animals. In some cases, these resources, otherwise gifts of nature, are being degraded to the extent of 'worry'. Further, there are wide gaps between the economic yield obtained at research farms and in the farmers' fields, both in developed and developing countries. To combat such problems, a realistic inter-disciplinary approach is a 'must'.
The academic/research information contained in this book covers a wide range of aspects of applied and basic principles of the role of plant and crop physiology in solving the problems of agriculture and agriculture-based industries. It also highlights the expectations of environmentalists, horticulturists, foresters and industrialists from plant physiologists. The book will certainly be found useful by scientists, scholars, teachers, planners and administrators interested in disciplines like Botany, Agricultural Botany, Plant Breeding, Plant and Crop Physiology, Horticulture, Forestry and related industries. ..more

Insect Pests, Diseases & Post-Harvest Management of Horticultural Crops
L.C. De
Insects affect human beings by feeding on all kinds of plants including crop plants, forest trees, medicinal plants and even stored products causing huge amount of loss and also deterioration of food quality. In general, disease is an interaction among the host, parasite and the environment. Plant diseases may be due to pathogenic or non-pathogenic organisms. Pathogenic organisms include fungi, bacteria, fastidious vesicular bacteria, phytoplasmas, spiroplasmas, viruses, viroids, algae, protozoa and phanerogamic parasiteswhereas non-pathogenic diseases are influenced by environmental or non-living factors.
Post-harvest losses account for 27-30% of total food produced globally.Due to perishability in nature horticultural crops respire, transpire and ripen upon harvest thus deteriorating the food value of the produce for human consumption.Use of appropriate post-harvest technologies minimizes the post-harvest and storage losses; adds value to the produce, generates rural employment and renovate horti-based industries in the rural sector. Due to availability of a large number of traditional fruits and vegetables in India, there is need to develop protocols for primary processing and crop specific machineries.
In view of above, the present publication on ‘Insect Pests, Diseases and Post-harvest Management of Horticultural Crops’ is planned in 09 interesting chapters vividly highlighting various aspects covering insect pests and diseases of fruit and plantation crops, insect pests and diseases of vegetables and spices, insects pests and diseases of flowers, medicinal and aromatic plants, harvest and post-harvest handlings in fruit and plantation crops, harvest and post-harvest handlings in vegetable and spices, harvest & post-harvest handlings in flower, medicinal and aromatic plants, processing and value addition in fruit and plantation crops, processing and value addition in vegetables and spices and processing and value addition in flowers, medicinal and aromatic plants.

Growth and Improvement of Horticultural Crops
L.C. De
Growth brings about a permanent change in any plant or its part in respect to its size, form, weight and volume. In fruit crops, the inherent nature of a long gestation period, higher heterozygosity, scanty information on inheritance pattern, often cross pollination, excessive fruit drop, parthenocarpy and lesser seed number restricting the availability of hybrid seedlings for evaluation are the real challenges in crop improvement program.Vegetable improvement includes the development of hybrids and new varieties for new horti zones, higher yield, greater tolerances to insect pests and diseases, excellent fruit quality, nutritional content and physiological efficiency. Evaluation of natural diversity, selection, hybridization, exploitation of hybrid vigour and male sterile lines, polyploidy and mutation have played an important role in production maximization and productivity of both self and cross pollinated indigenous, commercial and elite vegetable crops. The main emphasis in ornamental plant breeding is to improve variety traits, novel colour, form, size, number of flowers, flower vase life, repeat blooming, disease resistance, nutrient uptake capacity and growth habit.Various types of new varieties of ornamental crops have been produced for many years by cross hybridization and mutation breeding techniques, separately or in combination.
In view of above, the present publication on ‘Growth and Improvement of Horticultural Crops’ is planned in 10 interesting chapters vividly highlighting various aspects covering Breeding of Horticultural Crops, Growth and Development of Horticultural Crops, Principles and Methods of Training and Pruning of Fruit Crops, Use of Growth Regulators in Horticulture, Fruitfulness and Unfruitfulness, Nutrient Management, Water Management, Cropping System, Principle of Organic Farming and Rejuvenation of Old Orchards.
It may be humbly claimed that this is the most comprehensive book on growth and improvement of horticultural crops and will be useful to teachers, students, scientists, nurserymen, landscape designer, planners, amateurs and professional gardeners and above all farmers.

Breeding of Horticultural Crops
V. Ponnuswami
,
T. Sumathi
Horticultural crops are those that serve to fit the special food and aesthetic needs of humans. In horticultural crops, quality is supreme. While it is true that there is no arguing about taste, the fact of the matter is that many horticultural crop cultivars with unique qualities are so unique, admired, and appreciated that they become the basis for entire industries. Examples include the 'Bartlett' ('Williams') pear which dominates fresh fruit production and is almost the only cultivar used for processing, 'Hayward' kiwifruit, 'Smooth Cayenne' pineapple (for processing), 'Clementine' mandarin, and 'Dwarf Cavendish' banana. In horticultural crops, breeding objectives must be consumer directed because consumers make individual decisions about consumption and make choices between different cultivars and alternate crop species.
Innovations of individual breeders combined with further breeding efforts to increase usefulness and adaptation are the key to horticultural progress. It is clear that a way must be found to incorporate consumer satisfaction in the selection process. The contents includes l Objectives and Scope of Plant Breeding l Modes of Reproduction, Mating Systems & Their Significance on Population Structure l Modes of Pollination Control and Systems of Breeding
l Sterility and Incompatibility Systems l Genetic Properties of Populations Under Equilibrium; Changes in Gene & Genotypic Frequency, Genetic Load, Genetic Drift l Factors Affecting Gene and Genotypic Frequency l Factors of Evolution and Speciation, Importance of Biodiversity Conservation l Implication of Taxonomy In Breeding l Mendalian Inheritance and Non Mendalian Inheritance l Crop Improvement Methods – Plant Introduction and Selection; Through Hybridization; Pedigree Breeding; Bulk and Single Seed Descent Method; Mass Selection,Recurrent and Reciprocal Recurrent Selection; Back Cross Breeding l Development of F1 Hybrids l Synthetics and Composites l Mutation Breeding l Polyploidy Breeding l Breeding Methods for Perennial Horticultural Crops l Breeding Methods for Annual Horticultural Crops
l Breeding for Biotic Resistance l Breeding for Abiotic Stress Resistance l Molecular Markers,Genetic Fedelity Conformation and Markers Assisted Selection l Genetic Transformation Methods in Plants l Gene Silencing
It is hoped that this book will be useful to all stakeholders involved in breeding in Horticulture. The book is designed to prepare students for postgraduate school or careers in research and development of horticultural crops. ..more
