English Phonetics and Linguistics aims at the readers with the basic principles and concepts of the subject. Linguistics has, over the past few decades, grown into a multidimensional discipline interacting with such diverse areas of study as psychology, sociology, anthropology, palaeography, history, information science and so on. Much insight and knowledge about men’s linguistic behaviour have been gained recently through this interaction. As a section on historical comparative linguistics discusses the immensely interesting journey of a language through evolutionary stages, grouping of different languages into families on the basis of “genetics affinities” and changes that occur in a language over the years.
