This present book has special value in its author’s thoughtful and perceptive analysis of ways in which character and place are ‘reconstituted’ by mythic and poetic means in Randolph Stow’s novels. Nidhi Bhagat’s readings of Stow’s nine novels are characterised by a continuing interest in the author’s representations of Australian landscape and life. In her chapter on Stow’s fourth novel, Tourmaline, for example, Ms Bhagat demonstrates that the outback town of Tourmaline in the Western Australian desert is represented as a spiritual landscape’. In her excellent summing-up of the effects of Tourmaline, she comments on the novel’s unique mix of ideology and description: 'More than a philosophical novel about Christianity…(Tourmaline) is the most imaginative and so far the most sustained celebration of the “Loved Land” of Australia’.
