The book begins by defining and outlining the field of environmental psychology. Various research methods and theories to understand the environment and behaviour relationship are covered in the next units. The first three units, thus, give a holistic idea about what environmental psychology is and how to study it. The later units, cover the type and amount of impact that our environment has on us. It is interesting to note that environment even affects our perception and cognition. Variety of environmental stressors, that are inescapable in today’s life, are also discussed at length. Whether it is any natural environmental stressor like Tsunami, earthquake or manmade problems like noise pollution or technological catastrophe, their effect on our lives cannot be ignored. Rising unmanageable population levels have given rise to new set of sensitive problems like crowding, lack of personal space and territoriality. The dearth of space, increases feeling of discomfort, kills privacy and raises the level of competition for every essential thing in life. Is such frustrating scenario healthy for a peaceful society? Certainly not! Hence, the last three units focus on how environment psychology can help us to deal with this problem and how far our government has worked in this direction.
